It's been interesting to watch the brouhaha about the NFL controversy. The saddest thing is that this is just another example of Trump's attempts at misdirection. He could care less what the players are doing on the field. He sure as heck doesn't care about them as human beings. If he did he wouldn't whine that they're not playing rough enough since the newest safety measures were put in place to try and keep them from incurring such severe brain damage from the hits they take during the games.

My father fought in World War II, my brother fought, and died, in Vietnam, to earn, and continue to support, every US citizen's right to peacefully protest. Whether you agree with them or not, they have the right to protest what they perceive as a racial injustice. It's part of the freedom we enjoy living in this country.

Begun bhorta, a recipe

Take one elderly eggplant that you bought last week from the manager's special shelf at Kroger and completely forgot about. Cut into it to check it's gone all dry and papery. But no, its flesh is as fleshy as a much younger eggplant. Cut into largeish chunks. Peel several cloves of garlic and throw into the bowl with the eggplant.

Heat up one large pot of water -- or in my case, the enameled dutch oven I bought from the thrift store last month, which is big and as yellow as an egg yolk. Salt generously. Bring to a boil. Add eggplant and garlic. Cover and bring down to a simmer. Eggplant will be cooked in about ten minutes, depending on how cooperative your stove is (mine is an electric and does what it wants.)

Meanwhile, prepare the vinaigrette: three parts extra virgin olive oil, one part apple cider. Add a dollop of Dijon mustard (from the largest and cheapest bottle you could find at the store) and a teaspoon of honey. Add salt and pepper to taste. Pour into a bottle with a sure lid and close. Shake furiously until emulsified & emotionally satisfied.

On a slightly cracked wooden chopping board cut up one small onion and as many Thai chilies as you can handle (from five to zero) and mince finely. Salt and pepper. Mix in vinaigrette.

Remember the eggplant, it's probably overcooked but what the hell. This is a old fashioned recipe and people in the past didn't care about overcooking their vegetables (irresponsible generalization). Drain the water and put the eggplant into a colander. Get rid of as much excess water as you can, though you won't be able to get rid of it all. Add to the onion-chili-vinaigrette mix. Squish. Mix. Consider using the food processor to make a more uniform blend but really, why bother? This isn't baba ganoush, after all.

Serve with rice and dal or something similarly bland. It packs quite a zing.

Bhortas are culturally and culinarily significant for Bengalis -- it's something that everyone's had and will have again. The word itself only means a mash -- anything could be a bhorta, but the most common are potatoes, tomatoes and the like. Often, people cook the vegetable over a flame (or over a gas range) for a nice char.

Traditionally, begun bhorta is made with mustard oil, but you can't buy a bottle of mustard oil in America that isn't sternly labeled 'For external use only' -- you feel like you're breaking the law if you're doing anything else (although now I'm suddenly wondering if anyone's ever used mustard oil as lube -- talk about a tingling sensation) so a robust olive oil will have to do. And some mustard too, to keep some of the mustard flavor.

Eggplants are wonderful things. I'm sorry I forgot this one and I'm glad it forgave me and allowed me to have a wonderful dinner anyway.

Yesterday, the bill arrived for Comcast. We expected this month’s bill to still reflect things from before we cut out watching cable due to whatever reason, but no. It’s better than that. This month, we seem to owe nothing, and we have been credited $65. So…next month the bill should be $5 once that's subtracted, until this returns to the expected $70 in November, I suspect.

Odd, but nice for once.

Meanwhile, as I hunt for a new computer, I realized that just in case of any emergency that requires me to go—either due to being forced to travel out of state again, or not—it might be best to search for laptops. So I’ve been looking at the HP* Pavilion 17 inch sort, since that’s held up well for Dad. He hasn’t had any problems with his, since he got it in 2013.

And since I prefer Windows 7, I purchased an OEM for Windows 7 Professional 64 bit, which should arrive sometime next week. I’ll use it once I have an appropriate laptop actually in my possession. I have also done in depth research of the Intel CPU, which one would allow an installation of 7 over 10, and which ones wouldn’t. I think I’ve figured that one out. I have far too many links gathered for all the steps to everything, so that’s what I’ve been doing this week! I also gathered all relating links to drivers that still support Windows 7 in either the CPU of Intel or AMD.

I also asked questions at Reddit, Seven Forums, Tom’s Hardware Forum, and Bleeping Computers so that I would have everything straight. As a side note, from one of those I gained the alternative of the Acer Aspire desktop, should other ideas not work. So that’s why I’ve been a bit quiet—research!

And on a non computer note, The Collinsport Historical Society has their round-up of everywhere that Dark Shadows can be found this Halloween season. If only I had Decades and TCM, I would be so happy on October 28th.

*We have a local place that works on all things HP, so if anything happens, straight to the manufacturer it can go.

I went looking for costume pieces. I'm aware that my chances of finding the kind of costume pieces I want are low, and it's likely to take more than a casual search to find the kind of things I want within my budget. But I wanted to at least get a sense of what's available.

One of the things I want, is a Victorian-esque high-neck long-sleeves full length dress. Doesn't need to be period-accurate at all; just needs to have roughly the right silhouette. So I went to Amazon and searched for a few things; "maxi" is the current term for long dresses, but that gets me a bunch of sleeveless evening gowns. I searched for "long sleeves," which got me a number of pajama-esque looking shirt dresses, which warned me that searching for anything with extra coverage on top was likely to mean they removed an equal amount of fabric from the bottom. And sure enough, searching for high-neck dresses gets a bunch of sheaths that stop at the garter belt line.

And this monstrosity, which I am inflicting on you, dear readers, because otherwise I will have to bear the pain of having seen it alone. I think the... shoes? leggings? tights? ... are a separate article of clothing, and apparently so is the collar. But the full ensemble is stunning.

playing Dragon Age: Origins. Duncan was a babe, but I've moved on to Alistair because he plays with my dog. in googling which gifts go to who I discovered what kind of fucked-up endings can happen with him if you're not playing a Human Noble, so I'm just chilling and figuring out where to go from here.

[insert rant about old white dude coming out to the land and feeling entitled to tell me what I can and cannot do with my life here]

said old white dude stomped off like a prissy little bitch when I told him to change his tone while he was talking to my mother, that she does not deserve being berated by him, so whatever you fucker, get off my land.

still have to jump through old white dude's hoops though because my mother forgot to send in the money for the land, and now we're on the verge of being foreclosed on. AGAIN. lolololol I want to die.

not getting writing done because of aforementioned hoops and also because I have to do a lot of shit outside in the small spurts of shade we get during the day. I've had a migraine nonstop since I posted the last fic, tbh, and that hasn't helped much. the only reason I'm playing DA:O is because the camera control via keyboard slows the swing down enough that it doesn't exacerbate things. which is good? but also doesn't help with productivity.

just took a benadryl for the itching/sneezing/post-nasal, so I should pass out in a couple hours. it is now raining for the first time in two weeks, whoopie. guess I'll go see about killing the zombie horde or whatever is pouring out of that castle, blah.

Meme, recently, seen everywhere:

1) Make a list of fifteen characters first, and keep it to yourself for the moment.

2) Ask your f-list to post questions in the comments. For example: "One, nine, and fifteen are chosen by a prophecy to save the world from four. Do they succeed?", "Under what circumstances might five and fourteen fall in love?", "Which character on the list would you most want on your side in a zombie invasion?"

3) After your f-list has stopped asking questions, round them up and answer them using the fifteen characters you selected beforehand, then post them.

Fandom post: Saiyuki Reload BLAST

Saiyuki Reload BLAST E11 (9/10) → Slightly disappointed with how Goku acted in E13 once the situation escalated; spoilery? )

I defended the anime's portrayal of him in E02 but I'm siding with the disappointed peeps on this one.

Some other spoilery stuff. )

I can't believe that the episode this week is gonna be the last. Part of me still has trouble believing that we even got a BLAST anime in the first place, and now it's already ending :( I have no idea how the finale's going to go or if we're even going to have a S02 somewhere down the line.

I found out what my computer model is. Until now, all I knew (since what was once written was lost to the mists of time, as the sticker wore off at some point) was it was just HP Compaq, since we hadn’t found the old paperwork for it as of yet. So I’m posting this mainly for my own sake, should I lose track of where I made a note of that.

HP Compaq dx2450 Microtower. I went to the support page for HP, and found the method for determining the type a particular model is.

So how did I find out? First, hit the plus sign around the Option 2 section. Their way didn’t work for me, and we never had HP Support Assistant in this computer, for whatever reason even back when it was still XP and would have had those original files. However, figure 1 mentions System Information. Typed in that, and the window that came up had everything, including a section for System Model. And there we have it.

Judging by this press release, it came out around April of 2008, if not earlier. Granted, my model was 32 bit, not the 64 bit they’re announcing. If that’s accurate, that means that the date I previously estimated is off by a few years. Should it make it another few months to 2018 prior to it being replaced, this one’s still going to have made it at least a decade. And should it still survive, we'll have it around as a spare, should its replacement have issues, or should Dad's laptop have problems down the line.
